故事的主人公小尼尔斯是个调皮捣蛋，好吃懒做，不学无术，的小男孩。还经常虐待自己家院子里的小动物的。可动物们也只能哑巴吃黄莲一有苦说不出。
突然有一天他看到外婆留给她妈妈的礼物箱，上面坐着一个小精灵还打算捉弄他，还过分的欺骗了他。结果被变成了一个小人，还受到了家里动物们的欺负和教训。但这一切都是他咎由自取。后来的随着大雄鹅开始了一场翻山过海的奇妙旅行。故事就此开始了。
突然有一天，命运多舛的尼尔斯又被一群乌鸦给抓住了，结果一只经常被嘲笑的乌鸦钝钝奋不顾身的去救下了尼尔斯，于是钝钝就被讨厌的乌鸦群抓起来了。尼尔斯也不顾一切地救下了钳钝。钝钝和尼尔斯道谢之后，尼尔斯又继续开始了自己的旅程。
不久后尼尔斯他们一个老鹰巢穴，只见里面躺着一只可爱的小雏鹰，叫做高尔果。大家都很喜欢它。可是糟糕的是这只小雏鹰竟然被可恶的动物园抓走了。尼尔斯和大雁群还有大雄鹅一起，想方设法地进入动物园。把小雏鹰解救了出来。
长期的旅途，让他不禁有些想念父母，想念自己的家。他想回家了。正在他犹豫沮丧的时候，他无意间听到了两头猫头鹰的对话。得知，只要自己安全的把大雄鹅送回家之后一切就可以恢复原样。
不知过了多久，经历了多少冒险故事，这一天终于到来了。大雁首领阿卡带着大雁群，尼尔斯，大雄鹅回到了家中。他开心极了。可他的父母却不之情地把他的朋友们都抓了起来。可正当，尼尔斯打算救他们的时候突然发现自己听不懂动物们的语言了。他把自己的经历讲给父母听之后，父母便把大雁们给放了。尼尔斯意识到自己变成人了。
从此之后，尼尔斯变成了一个善良 ，勤劳，可爱的小男孩了。
